Integrated Interventional Radiology Residency Program

The Vascular and Interventional Radiology Division at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital is proud to be one of the first programs in the country to receive ACGME approval and has had an approved Interventional Radiology Residency since 2017.

Our faculty includes national leaders in uterine embolization, TACE, radioembolizaiton, portal venous interventions and peripheral arterial disease.

The program is designed to ensure training in the full range of interventional radiology practice, with extensive procedural, clinical and consultative experience.

The integrated residency program is approved for 2 spots annually and is a 6 year categorical program.

Internship, PGY-1

The IR residency at MedStar Health is a categorical program, including a surgical internship year spent between MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and MedStar Washington Hospital Center, tailored to the needs of a future interventional radiologist.

Rotations during internship include the following:

• 1 IR rotation at GUH and 1 IR rotation at WHC;
• Rotations in vascular surgery, SICU, transplant, trauma, thoracic, surgical oncology split between GUH and WHC; additional rotations (such as acute general surgery, minimally invasive surgery and others) will be assigned when starting residency.

Diagnostic Residency, PGY-2 to PGY-4

The internship year is followed by 3 years of diagnostic radiology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, identical to that of the diagnostic radiology residency. During this time, there is 1 IR rotation at GUH per academic year.

Call requirements will be identical to those of the Diagnostic residency. Diagnostic rotations include an away rotation at Shock Trauma in Baltimore and pediatric rotations at Children’s Hospital in Washington, DC.

IR training, PGY-5 and PGY-6

The final two years of the residency will be spent fulfilling diagnostic radiology training requirements, on clinical rotations and in interventional radiology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and its affiliates, such as MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where training will be focused on peripheral arterial, aortic and trauma interventions and general interventional radiology. Additionally, trainees will also rotate at an outpatient IR center, focusing on dialysis management and varicose vein treatment.

Diagnostic requirements during the PGY-5 year include 1 month-long rotation in nuclear medicine (ABR mandated), 1 in breast imaging (ABR mandated), 1 block of night float (2 weeks) and 1 block (2 weeks) on fluoroscopy.

Clinical rotations include 1 month-long rotation in MICU, 1 in SICU, 1 in hepatology and 1 in oncology.

Research Institute

MedStar Health Research Institute (MHRI) is the research division of MedStar Health. MHRI provides scientific, administrative, and regulatory support for clinical research throughout the MedStar Health system. MHRI supports many types and areas of research from bench to bedside and into the community. There is a particular emphasis on promoting research within the Graduate Medical Education programs within MedStar.

For residents and fellows in particular, MHRI offers the following services:

• Faculty mentorship
• Research courses dedicated to residents
• Biostatistical and bioinformatics support
• Assistance with grant/IRB writing
• Multiple research grants

There are multiple internal opportunities for residents and fellows to present their research, including the Department of Radiology’s Research Symposium and a well attended Annual Research Symposium with a robust number of submissions across the MedStar Health System.
