Department of Radiology

Complete PACS integration of all Radiology Departments within the 10-hospital MedStar Health System.
Powerscribe Voice Recognition Software and dedicated Siemens and TerraRecon 3D workstations.
State of the art Ultrasound machines (with 3D and 4D Capabilities), 1.5 & 3T Siemens MRI, new Digital Fluoroscopy Room and new Siemens Dyna CT Interventional Radiology Suite.
Grand Rounds series with monthly lectures from experts on a variety of industry topics (lectures provided from inhouse Physicians and Visiting Professor from around the country).
World renowned Uterine Fibroid Embolization program, led by Dr. Spies, with exposure during VIR and also MRI/US.
Strong IR division, which in addition to UFE, includes Chemoembolization and RF ablation, with opportunities for residents to first-assist as much as they want.
Active Ultrasound service which provides the residents with extensive training in transplant sonography, MSK sonography, pediatric sonography and Ultrasound guided procedures.

Welcome to the website of the MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s Diagnostic Radiology Residency! As the Program Director, it is my pleasure to introduce you to our outstanding program and all that it has to offer.

We are committed to providing the highest quality education, mentorship, and research opportunities to our residents. Our goal is to help you develop into outstanding radiologists who are fully equipped to provide exceptional care to your patients and make significant contributions to the field of radiology.

Our program is medium-sized, offering 4 Diagnostic Radiology and 2 Dual certificate Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology positions per year. We pride ourselves on creating a supportive and collegial environment, where residents feel comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas, and collaborating with their peers. Our residents often comment on the strong sense of community within the program and the friendships that they form with their fellow residents, which can last throughout their careers in radiology. Our faculty are also highly accessible and approachable and are always willing to provide guidance and support to our residents. We believe that these strong relationships are critical to success and help to create a positive learning environment that fosters growth and development.

Our curriculum is designed to expose our residents to a broad range of subspecialties within the field, so that they can develop a well-rounded skillset and explore their areas of interest. Our residents work closely with faculty members who are experts in these subspecialties, gaining exposure to a wide variety of imaging modalities. In addition, our program also provides opportunities for residents to participate in electives and research projects that allow them to explore their areas of interest in greater depth. We believe that this range of clinical experiences helps to prepare our residents for a successful career in radiology, whether they choose to pursue a career in academic medicine, private practice, or another setting.

We understand that diversity in medicine makes all of us better. We understand that the lack of underrepresented minorities in medicine is a public health crisis. We want to do better.

Call Schedule

Residents will only cover diagnostic calls at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. The other hospitals in our system are fully staffed by attending radiologists. One resident taking solo calls is in house per call shift with attending backup at home in each subspecialty area. All faculty have PACS access from home.

Diagnostic call:

No diagnostic call during first year (PGY-2). Second year residents (DR and IR) cover diagnostic call on holidays and holiday weekends.
US technologists are on-site 24/7. CT and MRI are active 24/7.
Swing shift (one week at a time): from Monday to Friday. Coverage of all exams performed from 5pm to 8pm. The resident reports to service at 12pm for that week.
Nighfloat (2 week blocks): from Sunday through Thursday, from 8pm to 8am. Second years take more call and becomes less as you become more senior.
Weekends: 2 residents take call each weekend. One resident covers Friday and Saturday night, from 8pm to 8am. The second resident covers Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 8pm. The Friday night call resident does not report to clinical service on Friday and comes in only for call duty. There is a $10 food stipend for each day of call (weekends only, not nightfloat).

IR Call:

For each IR rotation, each resident covers 5 week days (24 hours) and 1 one separate weekend. The diagnostic residents take buddy call with a fellow during their first rotation. IR residents take call during their internship year and then take solo call after that.
